Computer vision, object and facial detections are often used for research and functional needs, such as by self-driving cars to detect road users. How might we use the technology for creative activities to bring joy through familiar visual artifacts, and explore new ways of sketching? Using p5.speech, the sketch takes in speech input from the environment. We think of encaustic tiles in Vietnam, brought for production during the French colonization era in the 1850s, the ceramic talavera tiles of Mexico tracing back to Spanish colonization in the 16th century. The tiles are created far apart both in time and space, yet we can find similarities between them. How does one identify a tile? Is it based on where it was made? Originally invented? Does it bear the maker’s nationality? The cultural heritage that tile inherited? How does one identify a person?&nbsp; Through the mosaic portrayal of the participant from ML generated tiles, I hope to move beyond labelling a person based on origin of birth or appearance, and show the multi-layered factors that make us who we are. Face ID Frida Kahlo Mexico talavera ceramic tiles I really enjoyed playing with the resolution to see when the images became too abstract to recognize. When zoomed out, I could see the tile details more clearly, but the sketch lost the definition of the source. When zoomed in, the tiles turned into simply colored pixels and lost the details. Thank you Alba &amp; Maria for letting me use their beautiful collection of azulejos for training! TileGAN are three Generative Adversarial Networks trained on collections of tile images from Vietnam, Portugal, and Mexico. TileGAN were based on pre-trained StyleGAN2’s Flickr faces model architecture, using RunwayML and Google Colab for different iterations. While the tiles were made far apart, they share commonalities in design and motifs. For example, flowers were present across all three tile types, as well as symmetry and tessellated patterns. woven, reed by reed, over thirty minutes. The audio represents the sonic experience while making a reed mat: the sound of reed fields, cutting and gathering the reeds, getting set up and working the wooden loom. When I was a child growing up in Vietnam, like many households back then, my family used to gather around for dinner on a woven reed mat. Sometimes the dinner would go on for so long that the reeds left imprints on my skin, a memento of sorts for the time shared together. Reed mat weaving is a Vietnamese traditional handicraft, but has now become a vanishing practice due to industrialization and a shifting lifestyle. Located in central Vietnam, Cam Ne village was renowned for their colorful and meticulous hand-woven reed mats that were once favored by kings of the Nguyen Dynasty. The mat took one day to weave, reed by reed, and had to be performed by two people using a simple wooden loom. The rustling sound of reeds and the creaking rhythm of the wooden loom were the heartbeat of the village. Now, there is only one household left in the village holding onto the craft. Exhibited at the Open Senses Festival in London, May 2017. The act of drinking involves multiple senses, from hand-eye coordination, to balance and haptic awareness. However, these factors often go unnoticed. Toast aims to turn this autonomous and familiar activity into a playful, social interaction that highlights the participant’s body movements in space, which is known as the proprioceptive sense. The three drinking instruments are expressed in physical media so as to reinforce an understanding of humans as embodied creatures, occupying space and time in specific ways. ordinary object – something that is readily available at the space. After a trip to The Trampery, we noticed that there are a lot of chairs and stools in the main lobby where people hang out, get a drink and socialise with others. The experience, while definitely surprised our testers, simply ended when they managed to balance themselves and sit down. We were left with either trying to improve the idea somehow, or scrape it altogether to start over. The drinking idea came to us when we were playing around with the springs. We attached the spring to the end of a leftover chair leg while trying to lift up a cup. Drinking became unexpectedly challenging and (to be honest) a bit ridiculous as we struggled to keep the liquid from spilling all over!&nbsp; We realised that experimenting with the act of drinking might be a better way to go, at the same time still retaining our goal of intervening on an ordinary object in a social setting. However, the data used to train these models inhibit our unconscious bias, making them a mirror of the real world instead of a crystal ball. As the technology becomes increasingly ubiquitous, when is a good time to discuss ethics and value judgments before deciding who gets bail, who goes to jail, and who goes free? Through the Looking Algorithm is a crime prediction machine that prophesies the participant’s future petty crime via a receipt printer. Disguised under the set up of facial, mood, and gender recognition technologies, as well as the collaboration effort with a Data Scientist from the Ministry of Justice, the profiling experience actually has no crime data models behind the scenes. Predictive policing claimed to be based on “big data” and statistical analysis to gain validity for their identification of criminal activities. The intensity of anticipation – which may be combined with hope, excitement, apprehension, or fear – correlates strongly with how much we care about the impact of a particular outcome. The Phone-Wrecker project is our playful exploration into human projections of emotion onto non-living materials, in particular current and emerging technologies. Now new technologies including brain imaging and deep brain stimulation have opened up our abilities to not only observe, but also manipulate emotions. At the same time, work in artificial intelligence has been working intensively on the topic of synthetic or robotic emotions in the hope that we can develop more and more human-like machine intelligences. In this context we may ask ourselves: Can a machine ever have emotions? Is that even desirable? How easy is it to imitate human emotions? These machines were designed to elicit and evoke a emotional response that focuses on our connection most of us have with our phones. Some participants wanted to smash the phones, others wouldn't turn the crank, some tentatively removed pebbles to see the result. All of these responses show and emphatic, and frustrated relationship we humans have with these devices—some hate their devotion to their phone, others have a fondness to them and wish no harm comes human emotions, paying close attention to visual and haptic feedbacks. We started off with putting fragile objects – eggs, balloons, even ferrofluid – at stake, but none seemed to evoke the emotional reaction we were hoping for. It was until we tested out our first prototypes in class with our phones that we discovered the missing element: something we truly care about. Unbias started with EQUIwikiPEDIA, an initiative to create an online filtering device, together with the Wikimedia Foundation, for equality and active change making within academia and beyond. During our first hackathon, we created a chrome extension that displays the percentage of reference to the various pronouns on a webpage (eg.
